My Lunch with Holmes Rolston

Yesterday my good friend Professor Michael Zimmerman and I drove up to Fort Collins to have lunch with distinguished philosopher Holmes Rolston, III. Rolston is widely considered to be the father of environmental ethics, and I have made good use of his insightful value theory in my forthcoming book Evolution's Purpose. Rolston is the author of a number of influential philosophy books, and he won the prestigious and lucrative Templeton Prize in 2003.

During our lunch we discussed his latest book, Three Big Bangs (Colombia University Press 2010), which describes the three great "evolutionary singularities" that have produced the cosmos, life, and human cultural evolution.

We also discussed some of the ideas in Evolution's Purpose, and Professor Rolston was kind enough to agree to look over my manuscript with an eye to an endorsement. I highly recommend his philosophy to anyone interested in powerful arguments that harmonize science and spirituality. In addition to Three Big Bangs, his books Environmental Ethics and Science and Religion: A Critical Survey are especially excellent.
