New Website for SteveMcIntosh.com and New Blog Location
Tuesday, December 18, 2012 9:21 AM
This is my last blog at this
internet location: "blog.stevemcintosh.com". In connection with the redesign of my author website, my blog will
now be hosted at this URL: www.stevemcintosh.com/blog
The new blog is easiest to get to by going to stevemcintosh.com and clicking on the ""blog" button.
I originally created
SteveMcIntosh.com back in 2007 in connection with the launch of my first book, Integral Consciousness. Although the
site was updated to include all the new information associated with my 2012
book, Evolution's Purpose, the site
still looked dated.
Recognizing the need for an
update, my wife Tehya, who has been helping with my Facebook and Twitter author
pages, encouraged me to redo SteveMcIntosh.com using the "Web 2.0"
style. So now, after some weeks of work with my capable webmaster Andy Schwarz,
we are proud to announce the launch of this all-new website.
The Forum in Paris
Thursday, October 25, 2012 1:16 PM
Earlier this month I was at the
Forum for the Evolution of Consciousness in Paris. The event included revered French intellectual Edgar Morin, as well as Systems Scientist Ervin Laszlo, both of whom did dialogues with Andrew Cohen. Carter Phipps and I did a dialogue presentation on the emergence of the evolutionary worldview.
The sold-out event was held at Paris' Sorbonne University. They had space for 500 and could have probably filled a space for closer to 1,000 attendees, as there seemed to be a lot of buzz around the event. Overall it was very well received by the French, who are somewhat new to this
way of thinking, despite the legacy of the great French integral
philosophers Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and Henri Bergson. Below and above are some pictures of the event.

Quotes from Evolution's Purpose on Beauty, Truth, and Goodness
Friday, September 14, 2012 2:21 PM
Both my publisher and my publicist have been telling me that every author needs a robust social media presence. So after resisting it for a while, I'm starting to use Twitter. And I'm starting by mining
Evolution's Purpose for short quotes of mine that lend themselves to "tweets." Looking through the list of quotable quotes, the ones below on the beautiful, true, and good seemed to stand out. I'll be posting additional quotes here in the days ahead.
"Beauty, truth, and goodness are actually woven into the fabric of being. In other words, the aesthetic, the rational, and the moral, constitute essential, irreducible dimensions of human experience that continually come to the forefront whenever we think about the world from philosophical and spiritual perspectives."
"The presence of beauty, truth, and goodness—both actual and potential—is something we can all sense to a greater or lesser degree. And it is the ubiquitous reality of these values that serve as the "final cause" of the motion of evolution."
"Ultimately, the authentic experience of goodness, truth, or beauty is a spiritual experience, which gives us a taste of unity. And this fleeting glimpse of unity includes the unity of time in the present moment, wherein future potentials can be palpably felt."
"Beauty, truth, and goodness are actually the comprehensible elements of Deity—the aspects of spirit that we can experience and help create."
"We can perhaps sense how sublime beauty, profound truth, and loving kindness partake of the lingering memory of eternity that remains within the finite universe of time, calling us forward into the future."
"Because values are evolutionary gravitational forces subject to ever-deepening discovery, we must understand them through a dialectical epistemology that does not require them to stand still and behave like objects. Ultimately, we cannot define values, it is our values that define us."

Why do so many Americans deny evolution?
Friday, July 13, 2012 8:52 AM
In connection with the forthcoming launch of Evolution's Purpose, I'm working on a variety of articles that connect with contemporary issues. Here's a synopsis of the first one:
According to a recent Gallup Poll, 61% of Americans say they
don’t believe in evolution. Yet I suspect there is more to
this than simply evangelicalism or
Biblical literalism. A significant number of these respondents are rejecting
the contemporary philosophy of evolution,
more than the science of evolution itself.
For many in our culture, the science of evolution is seen as
inextricably bound up with a mechanistic philosophy that asserts that life and
the universe are purposeless accidents. So If we want to promote public
literacy in science, we need to better recognize the ways in which science is
used frequently and illegitimately as a weapon against spirituality.
Discarding superstition and mythic beliefs is certainly an
important part of our maturation as a society. But a more nuanced understanding
of these poll numbers reveals that Americans are smarter about evolution than
we may think. That is, Americans know, even if only intuitively, that
scientific materialism is itself a myth and that the facts of evolution
actually point to a spiritual universe of progress and purpose.
Properly understood, science is not at odds with
spirituality, and the numbers show that a large portion of the educated public
is looking for a way to reconcile the two. This reconciliation is found within
the scientific facts themselves, which show how evolution generates increasing
intrinsic value and creativity in its unfolding. Indeed, evolution's underlying
purpose can be felt within each person as the impulse to grow toward
ever-widening realizations of beauty, truth, and goodness.
Speaking in New York June 5th
Sunday, May 27, 2012 11:38 AM
This week I'm traveling to Massachusetts and New York to work with the former editors of EnlightenNext Magazine on a new policy institute we are founding called
The Institute for Cultural Evolution.
The Institute's mission is to solve some of our most difficult political problems by helping to bring about the incremental evolution of consciousness and culture. These problems include climate change, political gridlock, extremism, and America's changing role in the world. For example, the Institute's campaign to combat climate change seeks to increase political and economic will within the American electorate and marketplace to invest in climate change amelioration and new energy technology. The Institute's slogan is: "Nothing makes sense in politics except in the light of cultural evolution."
In connection with the start-up activities of this new think tank, I will be attending a number of meetings and private salons in New York City. However, I will be participating in a public panel discussion about cultural evolution in general with Carter Phipps and Elizabeth Debold at 7PM on Tuesday night, June 5th. This event is being jointly sponsored by the New York Integral Salon and EnlightenNext New York. Please check the websites or Facebook pages of these groups for the location and more details.
Also, I'll be posting more on The Institute for Cultural Evolution think tank in the weeks ahead.
